PETER FINNIGAN ARCHITECTS

This is a relatively modest sized holiday home situated in Orphir, Orkney on a site with a sea frontage and clear views to Hoy and Stromness. The house is based upon the original stone cottage of Breck with an extension that effectively doubles the size of the accommodation.

As with all our designs the scheme takes maximum advantage of the views and the light. The design also addresses the visual problem of extending an existing (small) stone cottage in a cost effective manner to achieve a strong coherent building form that doesn’t comprise and water down the form of the original cottage.

The wood clad extension creates a double height living space that allows the incorporation of a mezzanine bedroom and en-suite facilities. The large glazed feature window allows the occupants to enjoy the superb Hoy views without having to get out of bed!
